Public Works crews salting Designated Snow Routes ahead of potential snowfall, road slickness

(COLUMBIA, MO) -
Public Works crews began salting Designated Snow Routes ahead of potential snowfall, road slickness at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 26, with a full crew in place by 7 a.m. Although forecasts vary as to the intensity of today's weather, snow flurries began in Columbia at approximately 8:15 a.m.

Staying home is advised unless travel is absolutely necessary. Although resulting accumulation could be moderate, perhaps 1 inch or less, there remains a potential for a much more serious event, including severe road slickness. Public Works continues to monitor the forecast, the weather and pavement temperatures. Extremely low temperatures would limit the effectiveness of salt for this event. Road slickness becomes more likely as salt treatments become less effective.

If accumulation reaches 2 inches, residents are reminded not to park on Designated Snow Routes. Although always a last resort, vehicles would be subject to ticketing and towing without notice if they fail to move off of these routes. For a reminder notice of when accumulation reaches 2 inches, text COLUMBIAPW to 888777 and check Public Works social media for updates.
