(COLUMBIA, MO) -
UPDATE DETAILS: Due to rain, smoke testing throughout downtown, parts of University of Missouri campus and residential neighborhoods nearby was postponed until Wednesday, March 28. In order to reduce its impact on classes at the University of Missouri, TREKK will smoke test the campus portion of the progress map first, beginning with the area east of Providence Road and south of Locust. Once campus is complete, crews will revert back to original plan and progress south from E. Worley Street. Follow the City's Stormwater page on Facebook for updates on the project. &nb

Original Press Release: City of Columbia Sewer Utility has contracted with TREKK Design Group, LLC to conduct smoke tests throughout downtown, parts of University of Missouri campus and residential neighborhoods nearby. Testing will begin Monday, March 26 to the west of Providence Road and north of E. Ash Street (see attached Progress Diagram), progress southeast through downtown, south through the University of Missouri campus, then southwest along Flat Branch Creek. Testing conducted on City-owned gravity sewer lines is anticipated to conclude within a couple of weeks, weather pending.

Smoke testing will identify issues with the infrastructure where water is entering the sanitary sewer system. Removing these defects will reduce inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the sewer system and therefore reduce the occurrence of sewer backups and wet-weather overflows. A drone will be used to view the smoke on the rooftops from vent stacks of the buildings.

Properties within study areas Flat Branch I & C (maps attached) may be impacted by these tests. Door hangers will be placed in residential areas and TREKK will put flyers on outside doors and attempt to connect with businesses in the days leading up to the tests. The smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, odorless, white to gray in color and is harmless to pets. If smoke is detected in a building or home, the room should be ventilated through an open window or door.

For regular updates on this project, follow the Stormwater Facebook page. For assistance or questions, TREKK representatives will be in the area and can be reached at 573-445-4275. Residents may also call the City's Contact Center at 573-874-CITY (2489) or Sewer Utility at 573-441-5530.
