(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The City of Columbia Sewer Utility and contractor TREKK Design Group, LLC will conduct smoke tests on City-owned sewer lines downtown beginning Tuesday, April 24. Work is expected to last two days, weather permitting.

These tests are used to identify issues where unwanted water is entering the sewer system and may cause artificial smoke to leak into buildings or onto streets. A drone will be used to view the smoke and defects from vent stacks of the buildings. Removing these defects will reduce inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the sewer system and therefore reduce the occurrence of sewer backups and wet-weather overflows.

While this artificial smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, odorless and white to gray in color, it may set off smoke alarms in buildings using visual detection. If smoke is detected inside, the room should be ventilated through an open window or door.

For assistance or questions, TREKK representatives will be in the area and can be reached at 573-445-4275. Residents may also call the City’s Contact Center at 573-874-CITY (2489) or Sewer Utility at 573-441-5530.
