<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - On Sunday, April 29th, 2018 at 12:57 PM, units from the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched to the Best Western Plus Hotel (2904 Clark Lane) for an outside fire.  Fire crews arrived five minutes after dispatch and found an area of mulch on fire in the parking lot area and extending to an exterior wall of the structure.  The exterior fire was extinguished quickly with a pre-connected hose line.  A second crew entered the structure and found a small amount of fire had spread to an interior wall adjacent to the exterior fire area.  Crews were able to quickly remove a portion of the interior wall and extinguish the fire.  Occupants of the hotel were briefly evacuated during the incident.  Due to the minor amount of damage, occupants were able to return to the hotel.<br /><br />The Columbia Fire Department Fire Marshal's Division conducted an origin and cause investiga
 
 tion.  It was determined the fire originated in a bed of mulch outside the structure.  The cause of the fire is improperly discarded smoking materials.  The damages are estimated at $5000.  No injuries were reported.  A total of eight Columbia Fire units responded to the scene.<br /><br /></div>
