(COLUMBIA, MO) -
PROJECT UPDATE:

Phase two of the Clark Lane Sidewalk Project is scheduled to begin Thursday, June 7 at 7 a.m. as the westbound lane closure on Clark Lane extends to the section between Sylvan Lane and Route B/Paris Road.

The lane closure is necessary so that stormwater and grading can be done along the north side of Clark Lane for the new sidewalk. Work across the driveways will be coordinated with each homeowner.

The intersection of Towne Drive and Clark Lane will also be closed during this phase, which is tentatively expected to take about six weeks. The alternate route for all motorists will be Sylvan Lane. June Lane will remain open; however, access will be restricted from time to time during stormwater, sewer or other work.

"Access to Towne Drive from Clark Lane will be closed during this phase," Construction Project Superintendent David Fennewald said. "Residents living on the north side of Clark Lane who are coming from Route B/Paris Road (eastbound) will be allowed to cross the closed lane to get to their homes."

Eastbound Clark Lane will remain open. Motorists, pedestrians and nonmotorized transportation users should use extreme caution in the work zone and find alternate routes if possible.

ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE:

Clark Lane sidewalk project scheduled to begin May 21

Two federal grants, beginning in 2006, have helped make Columbia one of the country’s best cities for walking, riding and using nonmotorized transportation. After more than 35 Getabout Columbia projects, just three remain to be completed. Those projects are Bike Boulevard (MKT to Parkade), Shepard to Rollins Trail, and the Clark Lane Sidewalk Project. The contractor, S and A Equipment & Builders, plans to begin construction on the Clark Lane Sidewalk Project the week of May 21, weather permitting.

The project includes a sidewalk along the north side of Clark Lane from Route B/Paris Road to Lambeth Drive. This sidewalk will improve the safety of pedestrians along Clark Lane. In addition to the sidewalk, a pedestrian signal and crosswalk will be installed at the intersection of Clark Lane and Highway 63 Connector to make this busy intersection more pedestrian friendly.

No closures are scheduled during the intersection work, but during sidewalk construction the project will be divided into phases to reduce impact on traffic. This will require a shifting lane closure in the westbound lane of Clark Lane with a detour. Construction of the first phase, from Route B/Paris Road to Towne Drive, is scheduled to begin May 21, weather permitting. All phases of the project are estimated to be completed by fall 2018.

"Residences and driveways along Clark Lane will experience some inconveniences during the sidewalk work," Construction Project Superintendent David Fennewald said. "But we are coordinating with the contractor to minimize this, and driveway approaches affected by the construction will be rebuilt."

The total investment for the project is estimated at $1.03 million. An interested parties meeting for the project was held on Feb. 11, 2015 with approval by City Council on Sept. 8, 2015.
