<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - Fire investigators Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McGruder and Assistant Fire Marshal Jim Pasley determined the fire originated on a front deck on the lower level of the apartment building.  The cause of the fire is improperly discarded smoking materials.  Fifty percent of the apartment building is considered a total loss.<br /><br /><br /><br />The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire at 211-11 Anita Court on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 2:06pm.<br /><br />Units arrived less than five minutes later and observed heavy fire on the front of a two story apartment building.  The incident commander requested two additional units because of today's high temperatures.  Fire crews deployed pre-connected hose lines and elevated water streams and brought the incident under control in approximately twenty minutes.  There was significant fire damage to the s
 
 tructure resulting in a lengthy overhaul process to ensure no fire extension into concealed spaces.<br /><br />One occupant was injured in a fall while exiting the building and transported to an area hospital.  One firefighter was treated on the scene for heat exhaustion. <br /><br />Two Assistant Fire Marshals are performing an origin and cause fire investigation.  More details will be released as they become available.<br /><br />The Columbia Fire Department reminds citizens that smoke alarms save lives.  Smoke alarms should be placed outside rooms where people sleep and on every floor of a home.  Test your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button and replace fire alarm batteries twice a year.<br /><br />Eleven units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call.</div>
