(COLUMBIA, MO) -
Beginning Monday, Aug. 27, S&A Equipment and Builders plans to begin construction of a roundabout at Vandiver Drive and Parker Street, weather permitting. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible.

The Vandiver and Parker roundabout project was approved by the City Council on July 3, 2017. A public interested parties meeting was held on May 10, 2017 with 53 positive written comments from the public.

"The project received widespread positive support during our public involvement process," Public Works Director David Nichols said. "The roundabout at this location fits in very well with Vision Zero and our complete streets approach to capital improvements. Because this is a busy commercial street, we’ve staged construction in a manner to avoid a complete closure of Vandiver and minimize total disruption time to the public."

The roundabout will include splitter islands and sidewalks. It will be able to accommodate larger commercial vehicles and school buses. An additional 300 feet of the west leg of the roundabout on Vandiver Drive will be reconstructed to improve sight distance. Street lighting will also be installed.

During construction, one lane of Vandiver Drive on both sides of Parker Street will close for approximately 700 feet. One lane will remain open in alternating directions with a traffic signal on each end controlling the direction of traffic. Access to Parker Street will be closed on both sides of Vandiver Drive.

"We ask drivers to stay alert even with the alternating signal in case someone gets caught in the middle as the alternating signals change," Construction Superintendent David Fennewald said. "The contractor will do everything they can to prevent this but it is ultimately each driver’s responsibility to drive prudently and to remain attentive and patient with other drivers."

Go COMO’s Orange Route will continue south on Oakland Gravel Road, turn west on Vandiver Drive and then south on Burlington Drive to Heriford Road. Passengers along the affected route can meet the bus at Oakland Gravel Road/Holly Avenue or at Westfall Drive/Vandiver Drive.

National and local studies show that roundabouts maintain traffic flow while reducing crashes by 40 percent, injury crashes by nearly 80 percent, and fatal/disabling crashes by 90 percent. From 2011 to 2015, there were 14 reported collisions at the intersection of Vandiver Drive and Parker Street with six reported injuries.

The investment for the project is estimated at $900,000, which will be funded with 2018 County Road Tax Rebate and the 2015 Capital Improvement Sales Tax.
