(COLUMBIA, MO) - Roy F. Fox’s watercolor titled "Diner by Night" has been unveiled as this year’s Commemorative Poster for the City of Columbia. Unveiled on Wednesday, Aug. 29, the artwork was selected from 36 images submitted by mid-Missouri artists through a jury process.

Roy F. Fox is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Missouri. He has published 12 books and many chapters and articles. His most recent book is, Facing the Sky: Composing through Trauma in Word and Image. In 2016, he served as a Fulbright Scholar to Ireland.

About his artwork, Fox states, "Columbia has numerous landmarks to represent its many virtues. I’ve chosen the Broadway Diner for its unpretentious qualities, for enduring as a low-key, people-oriented island in a sea of academic and business structures. To me, this diner represents a ‘down-home’ refuge from our often imp
ersonal technocratic lives. I’ve tried to highlight this unsung place by excluding its surroundings. The outside and inside lights, as well as the busy interior, suggest the vibrant, varied clientele found at popular Columbia places. Overall, this diner’s simplicity is juxtaposed with a sky full of movement, light and energy."

The Commemorative Poster was unveiled Wednesday, Aug. 29 at Orr Street Studios where Chris Teeter and Donna Checkett hosted this year’s Celebration of the Arts. Funds raised by the event go toward the Columbia Arts Fund, an endowment fund established at the Community Foundation of Central Missouri intended to augment annual funding to local arts and culture organizations.

The City’s Commemorative Poster is a program of the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs and sponsored by Commerce Bank. The 2018 Columbia Commemorative Poster, "Diner by Night," can be purchased for $15 at the City
’s Office of Cultural Affairs, 300 S. Providence Road.
