<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:200%;"><h3 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px; margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 170%;">Columbia Police respond to disturbance - deploy non-lethal force on armed subject on Oct. 4</h3>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">At 7:59 p.m. on Oct. 4, Columbia Police officers were dispatched to the Break Time convenience store at 201 Nebraska Avenue regarding a male creating a disturbance in front of the store.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Officers arrived and encountered the subject involved in a disturbance just outside of the entrance to the Break Time store. The subject was yelling at customers and quickly became belligerent with officers when they approached him. As officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, the subject pulled out a large knife, approximately 12 inches in length, and began telling officers he was not going to jail. He repeatedly stated officers would have to shoot and kill him.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After ignoring multiple verbal commands to drop the knife, an officer deployed a taser. This was not effective as the subject was wearing a loose fitting jacket. Officers then used "O.C." spray and the subject then turned away and ran across Providence Road and into the parking lot of Joe Machens Nissan where additional officers confronted the subject. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The individual then turned around, still in possession of the knife, and continued to use the knife in a threatening manner while refusing to obey continuous and multiple verbal commands to drop the knife. Multiple officers attempted to tase Crawley and each was mostly ineffective again due to the man’s loose fitting clothing. At this point, the subject did fall to the ground and an officer approached him and attempted to take him into custody. The tasing was not completely effective and the subject recovered quickly and swung the knife at the officer. Another officer was then able to successfully tase the subject and he was taken into custody without further incident.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Columbia Police will apply for warrants for the following charges on the subject who is currently being evaluated in a medical facility:</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br /></span></p>

<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (2 counts)</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Unlawful use of a weapon</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Resisting/Interfering with arrest - Felony</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is an open and ongoing investigation and no further details are currently available. </span></p>
