(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) and The Center Project invites the public to an event to raise awareness and show support for those living with HIV/AIDS on Monday, Dec. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will take place at PHHS, 1005 W. Worley Street.

The event will start with a short documentary called "The Ryan White Story" and attendees will be given the opportunity to share their stories (either verbally or written) about how HIV has directly or indirectly affected them. There will be HIV testing throughout the night while watching a screening of the film "How to Survive a Plague."

Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day, which originated in 1988, and this year’s theme is "Live life positively-know your HIV status." According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, HIV testing is essential for expanding
treatment and ensuring that all people living with HIV can lead healthy and productive lives.

Approximately 1.1 million people in the United States have HIV, and 1 in 7 of them don't know it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care, however, the recommendation of testing frequency can vary based on individual risks.

PHHS recommends that all residents take steps towards health knowledge and get tested to know their status.
