(COLUMBIA, MO) - The fire origin and cause investigation for the residential structure fire at 5405 Chamois Drive is complete. Fire investigator, Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McGruder, determined the fire originated in an office area just south of the front door to the home. The fire is being ruled accidental. Because there were several ignition sources in the area of origin and there was significant damage, a specific cause could not be determined. However, a space heater and a shirt press cannot be ruled out as possible causes.

McGruder estimates the loss at $131,250.

The original media advisory for this event is below.

The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 5405 Chamois Drive on Sunday, January 3, 2019 at 4:03am.

First arriving units observed heavy fire coming from the roof and significan
t overall fire involvement at the home. The responding Division Chief requested an additional company be dispatched based on radio traffic, prior to his arrival.

Crews on scene deployed a pre-connected hose line and began an aggressive exterior fire attack. The home had too much fire involvement to conduct an interior attack. It took fire crews approximately one hour to bring the fire under control. The home sustained significant damage.

Neighbors indicated the home was not occupied at the time of the fire.

Fire investigators are performing a fire origin and cause investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available.

Ten units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call. There were no reported injuries.
