(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The City of Columbia Sewer and Stormwater Utilities will host an open house for interested parties from 4:30 until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 at City Hall, 701 E. Broadway. The meeting will focus on proposed projects that would include lining existing sewer and stormwater pipes to address structural deficiencies and rehabilitate the respective systems. The Utilities use this lining process because it is a cost-effective method of repair that reduces the need for heavy equipment and ground disturbance.

The proposed Stormwater project would rehabilitate approximately 830 linear feet of public stormwater pipe and inlets. The structurally deficient lines included as part of this project have been identified by Stormwater Utility staff and need to be repaired in order to keep the stormwater drainage system functioning properly. These stormwater lines are located throughout Columbia. The estimated investment for this project is $235,400 and would be funded through enterprise revenue.

The proposed Sewer project is a continuation of annual efforts to repair existing sewer infrastructure. Work would include lining approximately 90,000 linear feet of sewer main and manholes which were identified by Sewer Utility staff during routine operation and maintenance activities. Many of these pipes are cracked or broken, nearing the point of failure. Rehabilitation of these lines would reduce inflow and infiltration and the occurrence of stoppages. These sewer mains are located in various areas throughout Columbia. The estimated investment for this project is $3.2 million and would be funded through Sanitary Sewer funds provided as part of the 2013 ballot.

Work is currently planned to begin in fall 2019 and continue into 2020, following a public hearing this summer.

Residents are invited to attend this interested parties meeting to learn more about the projects and speak with the engineers.
