(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a smoke odor inside a residence at 3413 Balboa Lane on Thursday, June 13 at 2:51 a.m.

First arriving units reported smoke inside one side of a duplex where the party reporting the smoke odor lived. Fire crews forced entry into the other side of the duplex and found heavy smoke conditions but no fire. Crews conducted a search of the residence and found one occupant in the residence. The person found was unconscious and in a bedroom. The subject was removed from the home and CPR was administered by Fire Department personnel. Paramedics provided patient care and determined the subject was deceased.

Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McGruder was dispatched to perform a fire origin and cause investigation. He determined the fire originated in the kitchen as a result of unattended cooking. Conditions in the duplex were such that the fire extinguished on its own prior to fire crews arriving.

Through the investigation, it was determined that there was only one occupant in the residence at the time of the fire. Columbia Police identified the deceased as Jason Ian Frazier, 38, of Columbia. The next of kin has been notified.

Both units in the duplex had working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Seven units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this call.
