(COLUMBIA, MO) -
City of Columbia Public Works contractor MTS Contracting Inc. is scheduled to begin maintenance to the Plaza Parking Garage, 17 N. Eighth St., on July 29, weather permitting. Construction will take place in three phases.

Phase one is scheduled to begin July 29, weather permitting. A top floor sealing will be applied to prevent water damage to the parking surface. The sealing coat has to cure undisturbed so the top floor of the garage will be closed to all traffic. Signs and barricades will be in place to restrict traffic flow and direct motorists.

Phase two will consist of sealing the expansion joints on every level, beginning at the top. Expansion joints are located at the cut-through locations where traffic may pass from an up-ramp to a down-ramp or vice versa. The sealant takes six days before it is able to be driven across. During this time, temporary driving lanes will be created to assist traffic flow.

Phase three will consist of repairing cracked surfaces in, and around, the driving lane on the lowest floor. During this phase, the Seventh Street entrance will be barricaded. All traffic will enter from the Eighth Street entrance. Reserved spaces will be largely unaffected, however Parking Utilities will find suitable alternative parking locations to those few spaces inaccessible due to the driving lanes required. Regular permit holders should use all open non-reserved spaces, including those marked hourly. Signs and barricades will be used to direct traffic around the construction areas.

During all phases, the entrance at 8th Street and the exits onto Seventh Street and Eighth Street will remain accessible. Due to the large amount of permit holders that will be displaced during this maintenance project, all hourly parking will be eliminated at the Plaza Garage for the duration of this project. Hourly parkers should use the hourly spaces at the Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage, 500 E. Walnut St. & North Fifth St., during this maintenance period.

Maintenance is scheduled to be completed by early November, weather permitting.
