(COLUMBIA, MO) - The City of Columbia Human Resources Department Employee Wellness program has earned two prestigious awards for the programs they offer City employees to improve their health and well-being.

The mission of the Human Resources Employee Wellness program is to support operational excellence with programs, services, and education to improve the health and well-being of employees. The program focuses on the eight dimensions of well-being to ensure staff members have ample opportunities to address wellness in all areas of their lives, including social, emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, financial and environmental well-being.

"We are very proud of the Employee Wellness program and all it has to offer our employees. We strive to offer programs that improve the well-being of our staff members and these awards show that we are successful in helping
to achieve our operational excellence goals," City Manager John Glascock said.

Missouri Workplace Wellness Award from MU Extension and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, in partnership with the University of Missouri Extension, has launched the Missouri Workplace Wellness Award program, which recognizes employers that invest in creating a working environment that supports healthy behaviors. The City received the highest level, gold, of this award. This award considered the Employee Wellness program’s assessment of employee needs, interests, health risks and existing capacity; planning health improvement with measurable objectives; implementation of programs and practices to address employee lifestyle risk factors related to physical activity, nutrition, tobacco use and stress relief; and evaluation of data and organizational change. Employee Wellness met award c
riteria by having a wellness philosophy, a dedicated exercise area, onsite blood pressure machines, tobacco cessation programs, an employee assistance program, a private space for breastfeeding and more. The Missouri Workplace Wellness Award was presented at the July 18 Missouri Council for Activity & Nutrition meeting.

Well Deserved Award from UnitedHealthcare

UnitedHealthcare’s Well Deserved Award recognizes organizations that demonstrate a commitment to worksite wellness. Several of the Employee Wellness programs and trainings were considered in the application, specifically the information shared with employees, the programs offered, and the use of the UnitedHealthcare Rally app to encourage regular exercise and activity. Employee Wellness has seen improvement with employees self-reporting exercise. They state that over three years, they’ve seen a decrease in the number of employees who report that they get les
s than 30 minutes of exercise three times per week. This award also considered the program’s communication strategy, incentives, environmental and policy support, innovation, value of investment and more. The Well Deserved Award will be presented at the Aug. 5 City Council meeting.
