(COLUMBIA, MO) - For the third year in a row, the City of Columbia, Missouri, earned an all-star rating and a perfect score of 100 points on the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index. The Human Rights Campaign, the largest civil rights organization in America working for LGBTQ equality, conducted the seventh annual nationwide evaluation by rating cities on six categories: non-discrimination laws, municipality as employer, municipal services, law enforcement and leadership on LGBTQ equality.

Of the 506 cities rated in 2019, Columbia was one of 88 cities that earned a perfect score based on the six categories. Columbia also earned an all-star rating, which is given to cities when they obtain a high score in a state that lacks comprehensive non-discrimination laws for LGBTQ people. Columbia, St. Louis and Kansas City represented three of the 59 cities that earned an all-star rating. The national
average for all cities scored was a record high of 60 points. Eight cities in Missouri were scored; Columbia and St. Louis were the only two cities in the state to receive perfect scores with Kansas City at a nearly perfect score of 99.

Earlier this year, Columbia became the first city in Missouri to ban conversion therapy. The Municipal Equality Index reports that only 28 cities have anti-conversion therapy protections in states with no state-level protections, which is 11 more than last year.

"I’m proud that Columbia is leading the way in Missouri," Columbia Mayor Brian Treece said. "Now, more than ever, it’s important that we have non-discrimination laws in place. Not only does it provide a more welcoming community, but there’s also an economic impact. When we pass laws that protect everyone, it allows more room for our local businesses to flourish and to retain and recruit the best employees."

The Hum
an Rights Campaign states that the 506 cities selected for rating vary in size and include every state. The cities rated included the following: the 50 state capitals, the 200 largest cities in the United States, the five largest cities or municipalities in each state, the cities home to the state’s two largest public universities (including undergraduate and graduate enrollment), 75 cities and municipalities that have high proportions of same-sex couples, and 98 cities selected by the Human Rights Campaign and Equality Federation state groups members and supporters.

Read more about the Municipal Equality Index: https://www.hrc.org/mei
