Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services are partnering with The Center Project and Ragtag Cinema for a free World Aids Day event

The Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) is partnering with The Center Project and Ragtag Cinema to host a free screening of "How to Survive a Plague" to raise awareness and show support for those living with HIV/AIDS on Monday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m., at the Ragtag Cinema, 10 Hitt St.

"How to Survive a Plague" is a riveting, powerful telling of the story of the grassroots movement of activists, who seized upon scientific research to help develop the drugs that turned HIV from a mostly fatal infection to a manageable disease.

After the screening, there will be a comprehensive Q & A panel discussion with Dima Dandachi MD, physician at the University of Missouri's Department of Infectious Diseases; Dr. Marc Johnson, HIV researcher at the Bond Life Sciences Center; and Tracey Bathe, health educator at PHHS. A piece of the AIDS Quilt will also be at the theater for viewing.

Tickets to this free event are available at the Ragtag box office starting at noon, Monday, Dec 2. No more than four free tickets will be given to one person. A free ticket guarantees attendees a seat until ten minutes before showtime.

World AIDS Day (Dec. 1) is a time for remembering those lost to HIV/AIDS, destigmatization, the celebration of successes in saving and improving the lives of people living with HIV, increasing awareness and renewing collective commitment to ending the HIV epidemic in the United States and around the world. The theme for the 2019 observance is "Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Community by Community."
