Columbia's snow response operations continue as 25-person crew reports for night shift at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16

(COLUMBIA, MO) -
A 25-person City of Columbia plow crew reported at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, to continue 24/7 weather response operations. Crews have been pretreating, treating and/or plowing priority routes since prior to 7 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 14.

Precipitation has been ongoing in various forms with only a few breaks since the inception of the weather event. Crews were able to transition to some third priority routes today beginning at about 8 a.m. but around noon had to shift back and remain focused on first and second priority routes most of the day due to the active weather. First priority streets are currently near normal but wet condition, and all second priority streets are passable with spotty slick and snow pack issues. Other City streets are passable by a front wheel drive vehicle but have generally become snow packed.

Tonight’s overnight crew plans to continue to work on intersections as well as first and second priority routes but will transition to third priority routes as soon as possible once active precipitation has ended. Due to refreeze potential for the morning commute, crews may need to shift focus back to first priority routes at some point in the early morning. Overnight temperatures are expected to near 15 degrees, which would inhibit the effectiveness of salt and require continuous operations.

Tomorrow’s forecast of clear skies, some sunshine and warming temperatures should begin to help late tomorrow morning and early afternoon. Another full crew is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 7 a.m.

During an active event, crews focus on first and second priority routes. Details about priority routes and winter weather response are available at CoMoSnow.com. Motorists are encouraged to stay tuned to local forecasts, give themselves extra time for their commute and to drive with extreme caution. Additional updates will be available on the City’s social media pages: Facebook and Twitter - @CoMoGov and @ColumbiaMissouriPublicWorks.
