Boone County records three additional COVID-19 related deaths

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) was notified of three additional COVID-19 related deaths. These deaths will be reflected on the Sept. 29 data update. There have been a total of 12 COVID-19 related deaths in Boone County.

All three deaths occurred in individuals over the age of 80. The individuals were all residents of a long-term care facility located in Boone County. As has been past practice, the names of facilities are not released in order to protect the privacy of positive cases, patients and families of the deceased individuals.

The deaths occurred over a 10-day period in September, but were all reported to PHHS on Sept. 29. All deaths were confirmed by PHHS by cross referencing the official death certificate that is provided to the department. COVID-19 is only listed on the death certificate if the individual was identified as a pos
itive COVID-19 case and the virus was believed to be an underlying or contributing cause of death.

"Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of all who have passed due to COVID-19," said Stephanie Browning, director of PHHS. "Every death is a tragic loss in the fight against this virus. Today is another harsh reminder of why it’s imperative for everyone to continue to take precautions and help slow the spread of COVID-19."

PHHS continues to work with all long-term care facilities in Boone County to conduct case investigation and contact tracing efforts if a resident or staff member were to test positive. Under the current Public Health Order (2020-11 and 2020-11(c)), all long-term care facilities must maintain high levels of infection prevention and control measures, as well as follow the guidance and recommendations of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid!
Services related to reopening of facilities. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services also works aggressively with all long-term care facilities to conduct testing and isolate and quarantine all those exposed to the virus.
