(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) announces an additional extension of Public Health Orders, issued by Director Stephanie Browning. The Orders are set to expire at 11:59 a.m. on May 12, 2021, unless otherwise extended, rescinded, or modified. All previous COVID-19 protocols remain in effect in Columbia and Boone County under these Orders.

Boone County has recently seen a concerning increase in the number of COVID-19 infections. The five-day rolling average of new COVID-19 cases dropped to a low of 5 on March 31 and then rose to a five-day rolling average of 20 on April 9, representing a 300% increase. This increase is largely due to the 18 to 24-year-old population. While they make up 19% of the Boone County population, they represented 44.7% of new cases the week of April 4, making it the highest percentage of new cases in this age group since the week
of Sept. 7, 2020.

Additionally, on April 7 the first case of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7 was reported in Boone County. According to the CDC, this particular variant is associated with increased transmissibility, meaning it can spread more quickly.

Boone County continues to make progress towards vaccination efforts. As of April 12, there have been 68,871 first doses administered (38.2% of Boone County population) and 44,206 have completed vaccinations (24.5% of Boone County population). Anyone 16 and older wanting to receive the COVID-19 vaccine is now eligible as of April 9. To increase the number of people protected through vaccination, more time is needed to vaccinate those who most recently became eligible and want to be vaccinated.

"While we’ve made great progress on vaccinating our community, only a quarter of our population in Boone County has full protection," Browning said. "Extending the Orders give
s more of our community the opportunity to be fully protect!
ed against the virus to help us move forward."

Everyone is strongly encouraged to continue to follow all COVID-19 protocols such as wearing a mask, social distancing, avoiding gatherings, washing hands regularly and staying home when sick. Additionally, it’s important to make a plan to get vaccinated and help educate others on the benefits to our community when they receive their vaccine.
