Derek Chauvin and Policing

(COLUMBIA, MO) -
The Columbia Police Department announces that "Empowering People - A Discussion About State v. Derek Chauvin and Policing" will be postponed. The event, scheduled for April 22 at Jesse Hall, was co-sponsored by the Department, the University of Missouri School of Law and the Middleton Center for Race, Citizenship, and Justice.

This discussion was intended to occur prior to the conclusion of the trial. With the conclusion of the trial imminent, the timing of this discussion would not be appropriate.

"We are members of this community and want to be part of continuing conversations relating to recent events, to the trial and their relation to our local history," said Chief Geoff Jones.

As a part of its outreach efforts, CPD will continue to seek future opportunities to engage with the community. This forum would have served as one of several outreach events that have involved members of the Columbia Police Department. The Department hopes to reschedule the forum and also will seek opportunities to attend and participate in events hosted by others.

"As much as we hoped to talk with the community about the State v. Derek Chauvin trial and prosecution process, the timing does not favor it," said Chief Jones."We want to keep the lines of communication open on this topic and any other policing issue."
