<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - Columbia City Manager John Glascock issued the following statement on Wednesday, April 21, regarding the State of Minnesota v. Derek Chauvin trial.<br /><br />"Yesterday the jury returned its verdict in the State v. Derek Chauvin trial.  The jury found Mr. Chauvin guilty of all charges.<br /><br />Our thoughts remain with the family of George Floyd. We know these charges do not bring closure to Floyd’s family or members of the community because they cannot bring him back. Regrettably, this is only one of the many stories in a troubled history. The conclusion of this trial is a step toward progress and a catalyst for a larger conversation around the police’s responsibility to the people they protect.<br /><br />The actions that led to Floyd’s death do not reflect the values of the City of Columbia. We hold our officers to the highest standards and will continue to have th
 ese difficult conversations. The City of Columbia and the Columbia Police Department continue to work with an equity officer to revise policy, training and practice to ensure all of our community’s residents are treated equally and with respect. <br /><br />I would like to reiterate our Principles of Community that the City Council unanimously adopted. This statement reflects the type of inclusive and non-discriminatory environment we work daily to achieve. You can read the Principles of Community here: <a href="https://www.como.gov/Principles-of-Community/">CoMo.gov/Principles-of-Community</a>.<br /><br />By acknowledging our past and learning from what got us here, we bring rise to opportunities to improve upon ourselves, individually and collectively.  It is my hope that we use this time to reflect, connect and create opportunities to show others what we are truly capable of achieving in Columbia."</div>
