American Public Works Association re-accredits City of Columbia

(COLUMBIA, MO) -
City of Columbia Public Works, Utilities and Community Development departments were recognized at the City Council meeting on Monday, May 17, as achieving re-accreditation by the American Public Works Association (APWA). The award coincides with National Public Works Week, recognized this year from May 16 through May 22.

This national program started in 1995 to acknowledge a commitment to great management, the performance of duties and services consistent with nationally acclaimed standards and a demonstration of commitment to continuous improvement to the community. The City of Columbia Public Works Department was recognized as the fifth accredited agency nationwide in 2001 and was the first in Missouri. Once an agency becomes accredited, they must continue the practices that earned them the recognition and re-apply every four years. The department was subsequently awarded re-accreditation in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 and for a fifth time on October 14, 2020.

The Utilities and Community Development departments were first accredited in 2016 and then re-accredited along with the Public Works department in 2020.

Eric Landwehr, Missouri chapter delegate to the APWA Council of Chapters said, "As a public works professional I can say from experience that this award is very deserving. It’s an award that is earned through being a daily leader in the state amongst their peers. The sharing of information and the leadership is something that solidifies the validity of this award and drives home the point that your public works related departments are a highly regarded asset to your community, and your citizens should be proud of this achievement."

Through the process of re-accreditation, employees of the departments conducted a self-evaluation against nationally accepted standards, and made adjustments to the policies, practices and procedures to ensure consistency. A team of APWA members from around the country then evaluated the program, which included the review of over 200 policies and practices.

"We are thrilled to be receiving this re-accreditation for the fifth time," said Public Works Director, David A. Nichols. "We all worked hard towards receiving this re-accreditation. Our objective is continuous improvement in all areas of public works."
