Columbia Parks and Recreation seeking more lifeguards for pool season

(COLUMBIA, MO) -
Columbia Parks and Recreation is planning the reopening of City pools this summer but is facing staffing challenges.

The opening date for Albert-Oakland Family Aquatic Center has been delayed from May 29 to Wednesday, June 9. The pool will be open Wednesdays through Sundays for two sessions: the first session will be 12-2 p.m. and the second session will be 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Douglass Family Aquatic Center will open July 1, but only if enough lifeguards are hired to staff the pool. At this time, Lake of the Woods Pool is not scheduled to open for 2021. Little Mates Cove at Twin Lakes had already been designated to remain closed, due to structural issues and a shortfall in revenue to pay for renovations and operation costs.

Parks and Recreation staff is hopeful that the staff shortage will reverse and allow Douglass and Lake of the Woods Pool to open for the summer. The department needs a minimum of 70 guards.

"We’re experiencing the same challenges with hiring staff that many are facing right now," said Parks and Recreation Director Mike Griggs. "If we don’t have adequate staffing at our pools to ensure safety for our pool users, then that leaves us no choice but to shorten our pool season and possibly not open some facilities. These are difficult decisions but we are hopeful we will still be able to add staff for the summer."

Parks and Recreation has four upcoming training sessions for lifeguards: May 25-27, June 4-6, June 14-16 and June 18-20. They are free of cost for those who are employed by the City only. Registration is available by calling 573.874.7460. Starting pay is $10.30 per hour and shifts are flexible, with employees working between 10-28 hours per week. Guards must be at least 15 years of age.

Staff is planning to open Stephens Lake and spraygrounds at Stephens Lake Park, Flat Branch Park and Douglass Park on May 28. Those facilities are free and the lake is unguarded.
