(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a gas leak outside at 4710 Sussex Drive on Wednesday, June 23rd at 2:00pm.

The first unit arrived on the scene less than five minutes later and reported a fire in the yard that had melted siding on the house. Further investigation revealed that an underground gas line had been hit and was fueling the fire. The officer in command upgraded the call and requested additional personnel and equipment. Ameren UE was also notified.

Fire crews used a preconnected hose line to cool the siding and prevent additional damage while Ameren UE worked on the line and shut the gas off, extinguishing the fire.

Two male subjects stated they were using an auger and struck the gas line which then ignited. Both received burns to their face and arms. One was transported to the hospital with non-life th
reatening injuries, the other refused medical attention. No additional injuries were reported.

Eight units were dispatched to this call.
