(COLUMBIA, MO) - Due to the overnight flooding event and forecasted rain through the weekend, Columbia Parks and Recreation officials are asking the public to stay off the City's trail system and any barricaded park entry roadways and parking lots until a full assessment can be completed by park staff.

Common areas that tend to flood are along the MKT Trail, Hinkson Creek Trail, Twin Lakes Recreation Area, Hominy Creek Trail and the Grindstone Nature Area. At the time of this press release, each of these locations has areas underwater or damage to the trail surface making them unsafe for bicycle and pedestrian use.

Columbia Parks and Recreation Assistant Director, Gabe Huffington, reminds residents not to drive, cycle or walk around barricades or signs because of the difficulty in judging water levels. It only takes a few inches of water to sweep a person off their feet. Before deciding to cr
oss a body of water on foot or in a vehicle, remember the saying, "Turn around, don't drown."

Parks and Recreation staff are currently assessing the damage, adding barricades and caution tape to all hazard areas, and will continue to monitor the trail system through the weekend. It is anticipated that park staff will begin the majority of the necessary repairs and cleanup of the trail system on Monday, June 28, weather permitting.
