<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - The City of Columbia will be recognizing the efforts of volunteers who have contributed to municipal government Thursday evening, July 9, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Stephens Lake Park.  The event will occur in conjunction with the Stephens Lake Park Amphitheater Concert Series featuring the Columbia Community Band at 7 p.m.  Those who have volunteered with the City of Columbia over the last year have been invited.<br /><br />The appreciation event will also serve to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Volunteer Columbia, the City’s volunteer program.  The City of Columbia is unique in having a program dedicated to connecting residents to service opportunities.<br /><br />Volunteers serve the City in numerous ways, including working in our parks, beautifying our streets, picking up litter, teaching the public about recycling, helping at festivals and special events, and keeping our
  community safe.  <br /><br />During the City’s 2020 fiscal year that ended September 30, volunteers contributed 25,358 hours toward city programs and projects.  Based on a national value for volunteer service, these hours are worth nearly $645,000.  <br /><br />Volunteer service to the City was reduced by about a third in 2020 due to COVID-19 and its impact on operations.  Many self-directed activities where residents could serve safely had steady or increased participation during the pandemic.<br /><br />Anyone wanting to learn more about volunteering opportunities with the City of Columbia can call Volunteer Programs at 573.874.7499 or visit the City’s website at <a href="https://www.como.gov/">CoMo.gov</a>.</div>
