(COLUMBIA, MO) - After review, recommendation and authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), booster doses of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are now recommended for some groups of people. Booster doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine were previously recommended.

For individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, booster shots are recommended for those who are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months prior.

For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the following groups are eligible for a booster shot 6 months or more after their initial series:

Age 65 years or older.

Age 18 or older with an underlying medical condition (includes cancer, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, chronic lung disease, dementia or other neurological condition, diabetes (type 1 or 2), down syndrome, heart conditions, HIV infection, immunocompromised state, mental health conditions, overweight and obesity, pregnancy, sickle cell disease or thalassemia, current or former smoker, solid organ or blood stem cell transplant, stroke or cerebrovascular disease, substance use disorder and tuberculosis).

Age 18 or older who work in high-risk settings (includes first responders, health care workers, firefighters, police officers, congregate care staff, education staff, teachers, support staff, daycare workers, food and agriculture workers, manufacturing workers, corrections workers, U.S. Postal Service workers, public transit workers and grocery store workers).

Age 18 or older who live in a high-risk setting such as congregate facilities (includes long-term care facilities).

The list above could be updated by the CDC in the future.

The FDA and CDC also stated that individuals may choose or "mix and match" which vaccine they receive as a booster dose, even if it’s different from their original dose series.

Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services, 1005 W. Worley St., will have COVID-19 vaccination clinics at the office on Saturdays through Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. These clinics will be for anyone who needs any dose in the series (first, second, third or booster dose) of the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Individuals 12 years old and older are eligible for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines while the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is available for individuals aged 18 and older. Appointments are required and can be scheduled here: CoMo.gov/Health/Covid19-Vaccine-Appointments.

Anyone getting
a booster dose vaccine at a PHHS clinic should bring their vaccination card and will be required to sign an attestation form stating they are eligible to receive the booster vaccination based on the qualifying factors. Residents with questions about their qualifying factors should speak to their health care provider.

A list of other Boone County vaccinators can be found by visiting CoMo.gov/CovidVaccine.
