<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - The Columbia City Council approved an agreement with Columbia Public Schools (CPS) for school resource officers (SRO) and a joint memorandum of understanding (MOU) among CPS, local law enforcement, the juvenile office and the juvenile court system to continue their cooperative effort to establish guidelines for the handling of minor school-related offenses during the Monday, March 7 City Council meeting. <br /><br />Columbia Mayor Brian Treece and Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Brian Yearwood released the following statement regarding the new agreement:<br /><br />"This collaborative effort between the City of Columbia, Columbia Public Schools and other community partners will allow educators and officers with the Columbia Police Department to collaboratively support a safe and secure environment for Columbia's students. <br /><br />Providing a secure environment where students can focus on
  their studies and education will allow them to thrive academically. <br /><br />The SRO agreement and the memorandum of understanding allow officers with the Columbia Police Department to build relationships, connect students to resources, invest in students' academic futures and contribute to an environment that allows students from different backgrounds to thrive. <br /><br />The memorandum of understanding provides alternative options for students outside of the involvement of the criminal justice system. It allows for those engaged in the MOU to consider alternative options to resolve and restore any harm caused when minor offenses occur. <br /><br />The return of SROs and the continuation of the MOU agreement puts scholars first. Both play an important role in providing a high quality and safe learning environment for all."</div>
