(COLUMBIA, MO) -
On Sunday, May 22 at 4:02 p.m., the Columbia Fire Department was called to respond to the 4800 block of Clark Lane for a reported residential structure fire. Fire crews received reports of a residential building fire with animals trapped inside.

The first fire crew arrived 3 minutes later and encountered visible smoke from the rear of a multiple-story apartment building. The crew began an aggressive interior fire attack and search and rescue operation with a preconnected hose line.

As additional personnel and equipment arrived, fire crews established a water supply from a nearby fire hydrant and used additional preconnected hose lines to attack the fire.

During firefighting operations, crews located no human victims; however two canines were located inside and fire crews provided emergency care for them until their care was transferred to animal control for further evaluation and treatment. Three deceased animals, one cat and two rabbits, were also located inside the residence.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 10 minutes.

Columbia fire marshals were called to perform an origin and cause investigation. The fire originated on the stove and was caused by combustibles coming into contact with a heat source.

Ten crews from the Columbia Fire Department and one Boone Hospital Center advanced life support EMS asset responded to this incident.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms should be placed on every level of your home and outside of places where people sleep. Check your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button. Change your smoke alarm batteries at least twice per year when adjusting your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Replace any smoke alarm over ten (10) years old.
