(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia Police have arrested Damian Smith, 31, of Columbia, for fourth-degree domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, and armed criminal action.

The arrest is in response to an incident that occurred at approximately 2 a.m., when officers responded to the area of W. Sexton Road and Madison Street for a domestic disturbance. As officers searched for the suspect, later identified as Smith, the investigation led police to the 100 block of North Stadium Boulevard.

Smith barricaded himself in an apartment and at approximately 4 p.m. the Department responded to the scene with our SWAT team, Crisis Negotiations Team and K-9 unit. To preserve public safety, the surrounding apartments were evacuated and a perimeter established.

Officers first attempted to negotiate Smith’s surrender and worked at this goal over the course of severa
l hours. Only when Smith refused to cooperate did officers deploy gas into the apartment where he was barricaded. He surrendered shortly after and was taken into custody without incident.

The Department thanks its officers, negotiators and specialty units for bringing this to a peaceful end, and the community for their patience as officers managed the situation.

This is an ongoing investigation, however, an element of domestic violence has been identified in this case. If there’s a chance that anyone in the community could be at risk for domestic violence, call 311 or call 911 for an incident in progress. The Department has specialty officers trained to sensitively respond to these issues, provide resources and help protect those who are preyed upon by others.

If you know something, say something. Columbia Police are asking for your help. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to please contact the Columbia Police Departmen
t at 573.874.7652.

To report a tip without including your name or contact information, call CrimeStoppers at 573.875.TIPS (8477). A tip that leads to an arrest or helps solve a felony crime could result in a cash reward.
