(COLUMBIA, MO) - At approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16, Columbia Police responded to a report of shots fired in the 200 block of East Texas Avenue. Officers arrived on scene and located evidence that shots had been fired in a parking lot.

Through the investigation, officers learned that an adult female suspect had driven up to and fired at a parked vehicle where two adults were seated inside. It was later learned that an adult male in the parked vehicle had a previous relationship to the suspect in this case.

A brief exchange of gunfire occurred, after which the suspect fled the scene. Although officers observed gunshot damage to the vehicle, none of the individuals in the parked car were injured.

Officers later learned that an adult female with gunshot wounds, Laronya Brown, 25, of Columbia, was admitted to a local hospital. Witness testimony, video evidence and statements fr
om Brown led to her being identified as the suspect who originally fired at the vehicle and its occupants.

Brown was arrested for first-degree domestic assault, first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and tampering with a motor vehicle. She is now in custody at the Boone County Jail. Video evidence and statements from Brown supported that the adult male had only fired in self-defense, so no charges were brought against him.

The Department is grateful to the witnesses whose testimony helped the investigation and to the officers and detectives whose work allowed for quick arrest of the suspect.

If you know something, say something. Columbia Police are asking for your help. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to please contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652.

To report a tip without including your name or contact information, call CrimeStoppers at 573.875.TIPS (8477). A tip
that leads to an arrest or helps solve a felony crime could result in a cash reward.
