(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Police Department can now confirm that Sue A. Underwood, 83, of Columbia, is the victim of the fatality crash that occurred Dec. 1 on East Broadway at the Hominy Creek Trail Bridge. The Department extends its condolences to her friends and family.

At approximately 2 p.m. officers were dispatched to the area of East Broadway and Hominy Creek Trail for a collision involving two vehicles. Upon arrival, officers learned that a 2008 Ford Expedition and a 2004 Chevrolet Impala were involved in a head-on collision.

Ms. Underwood was the driver of the Impala and was wearing her seatbelt. She sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin has been notified.

Jonathan C. Key, 33, of Columbia, was the driver of the Expedition. He sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital by EMS. It
’s unknown if he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Further circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation by the Department’s Traffic Unit. We’re thankful for the assistance of the Columbia Fire Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol in responding to this incident.

Columbia Police encourage everyone to take every precaution and drive safely to protect themselves and others while driving. More than 1,000 people were killed in traffic crashes across Missouri in 2021, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Be sure to buckle your seatbelt, keep your phone down and keep your eyes on the road. If you observe anyone driving erratically or dangerously, either pull off the road to call or have a passenger call 911. The Department thanks everyone who helps keep our community safe.
