<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">City of Columbia, Water & Light statement on water testing violation</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">On Feb. 17, 2023, the City of Columbia received a Notice of Violation from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) for failure to submit samples for routine lead and copper analysis for the 2022 calendar year.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Water testing is conducted daily throughout the water production process to ensure that the City’s water is safe and meets water quality standards. The Notice of Violation that was received is for lead and copper testing to be conducted on water samples from customers’ homes. Lead enters drinking water primarily as a result of corrosion of household plumbing materials, including lead-based solder used to join copper pipes, brass and chrome-plated faucets and, in some cases, pipes made of lead that connect houses to the water main.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The City of Columbia last completed lead and copper sampling in 2019 as required by the State of Missouri. At that time, Water & Light did not find any concerns with the quality of the water.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Water & Light will begin collecting routine samples for 2023 in March, and test results will be published once they become available. Until test results are available, customers with immediate concerns can contact Deidra McClendon, Laboratory Supervisor, at 573.874.6242 or </span><a href="mailto:deidra.mcclendon@como.gov"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Deidra.McClendon@CoMo.gov</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> if they would like to have the water in their home tested. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The City of Columbia water supply continues to be safe and to meet water quality standards. Water & Light staff take violations seriously and are evaluating the events which led up to this Notice, working with MDNR to put corrective action into place, and will implement further measures as necessary to prevent future recurrences.</span></p>
