(COLUMBIA, MO) - Beginning Monday, Feb. 27, Professional Contractors & Engineers Incorporated (PC&E), contractor for the City of Columbia Public Works department, will begin installation of steel panels in the window openings of levels 5 through 8 of the Fifth and Walnut parking garage, 500 E. Walnut St.

Daily parking operations at the garage will be largely unaffected, as both hourly and permit parking spaces will be available throughout construction. However, certain parking spaces may be inaccessible while crews are working and will be clearly marked with signs.

The window barriers are part of a two-phase fall-prevention project at the parking structure. Phase one, which involved building 10.5 foot fencing along the perimeter of the roof, was completed at a cost of $488,000 by Central Fence LLC of Vienna, Missouri. Phase two, which involves the installation of steel panels to cover
approximately 150 openings, will cost $423,000.

Access to the top levels of the parking garage have been closed since Sept. 10, 2021. Once window barriers have been installed on level 8, the plywood barriers preventing access to the top levels will be removed by City parking maintenance staff.

PC&E estimates that the steel barriers will take one week per floor to install. Workers will cover openings starting on level 8 and will continue downward through level 5. Based on PC&E's estimate of one week per level, the project is expected to take four weeks and is estimated to be completed by Friday, March 24, weather permitting.
