(COLUMBIA, MO) - In a united effort to focus attention on children's mental health, a group of community organizations will hold a brief observance Wednesday, May 10, from 12:15 - 12:50 p.m. at Shelter Fountains, 1817 W. Broadway, Columbia, Missouri, to highlight Children's Mental Health Week. The gathering will feature City Council member Nick Foster of the 4th Ward reading the Children's Mental Health Week proclamation on behalf of Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe; along with distribution of green ribbons and remarks from the organizers of the event. The gathering will raise awareness of the growing need for children's mental health resources, mark appreciation for the behavioral health agencies, as well as celebrate the resilience of families, children and youth.

Those present will ring bells for one minute as part of a national observance Ring4Hope to highlight the progress made in research, treatment
and acceptance of mental health conditions.

Agencies primarily responsible for organizing the May 10 event are NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Columbia, Children's Grove of Columbia, and Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services.

"Children's Grove's mission is to inspire a culture of kindness and to support the mental and emotional well-being of our youth," said Kim Dude-Lammy, President of Children's Grove. "We are committed to partnering with other agencies to support Children's Mental Health Week."

Some local landmarks will display green lighting to call attention to the weeklong observance. May 7-13, residents will see green lights shining at night, as a show of support, at the City of Columbia's Keys to the City, commonly known as the Keyhole, 701 E. Broadway; Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS), 1005 W. Worley; Shelter Fountain, 1817 W. Broadway; Missouri Employers Mutua
l Insurance, 101 N. Keene St.; Gateway Plaza, 300 E. Broadway, and University of Missouri Hospital, 1 Hospital Dr.

"NAMI Columbia is pleased to help organize this event," said Barbara Buchanan, Member of the Board Directors of NAMI Columbia. "It's a celebration to bring together families and mental health resources. We work together to curb stigma surrounding mental health, advocate for resources and spread the word: earlier interventions for our children give better results."

The Family Access Center of Excellence (FACE) of Boone County will be presenting their 1st Annual Making a Difference Awards to the Columbia Police Department and Boone County Sheriff's Office regarding their collaborative efforts and commitment to the mental health of Boone County youth and families.

"This is our third year of gathering to honor families and our health care professionals who work diligently on behalf of children," said Heather Harlan, health educator of
PHHS. "According to the Centers for Disease Control, it's an average of 11 years from the time a young person experiences behavioral health symptoms before receiving professional help. Families work hard for their children, families inspire us and, more importantly, they deserve all the resources and support we can offer."

Attendees are encouraged to wear green, bring a bell to ring, and a banner or poster with the logo of their agency for group photos.

If there is rain on May 10, the event will be held at the Area Recreation Center, 1701 W.
