(COLUMBIA, MO) - On May 7 at approximately 12:46 a.m. Columbia Police responded to a report of a disturbance in the 20 block of South 10th Street. A video recording of our officers’ use of force with a subject has been brought to the attention of the Columbia Police Department.

"At my request, an independent criminal investigation into the officers' conduct is being conducted by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office," said Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones. "The criminal investigation is already under way, and CPD will provide all available reports and recordings to the Sheriff’s Office."

CPD will conduct an Internal Affairs investigation, consistent with its policy on complaints, internal investigations and discipline. As this process continues, the Department will follow its policies on employee leave during investigations.

"Police use of for
ce must be reasonable," Chief Jones said. "We have a high expectation that officers act appropriately when using force, and they are expected to intervene when they observe force that is not to these standards. I will enforce that expectation."

"We ask the public to contact either agency if they have additional information and/or recordings of this incident," Chief Jones said. "We are thankful for those who brought this to our attention."

Additional information may become available at a later date.

CPD Policy 300: Use of Force, Response to Resistance (inc. duty to intervene)
https://public.powerdms.com/COLU/documents/375554

CPD Policy 1020: Complaints, Internal Investigations and Discipline
https://public.powerdm
