<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - The actions of two Columbia Police officers are under investigation following a video recording of use of force with a subject in the 20 block of South 10th Street on May 7.  <br /><br />At the request of Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation. Additionally, the Columbia Police Department will conduct an Internal Affairs investigation into the matter. <br /><br />"The City and the Columbia Police Department take matters like this very seriously," City Manager De’Carlon Seewood said. "I am confident the Internal Affairs investigation, as well as the criminal investigation, are the appropriate next steps. I want to assure members of our community that we are following procedure throughout this process to allow for an in-depth review of this incident. The City prides itself on providing the h
 ighest standard of service and holds employees accountable when their actions do not reflect those standards." <br /><br />Statutory protections ensure due process during these types of investigations. The City is following procedures outlined by State law and City ordinances as well as established City policy. <br /><br />Internal Affairs investigations first begin with interviews. State statute requires an officer who is the subject of an investigation to be informed at least 24 hours prior to an interview. Columbia Police Department policy extends that time to 48 hours. <br /><br />Following interviews of the subject of an investigation and witnesses, Internal Affairs operations are generally completed within 90 days. However, 60-day extensions may be granted during that period. If there is a criminal component and extensions are requested to wait for the outcome of the criminal investigation additional extensions may be granted. <br /><br />Once a
  preliminary finding is made, officers that are the subject of an investigation have a minimum of seven days to appeal a determination. <br /><br />"The men and women who work at the Columbia Police Department are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the citizens of Columbia above all else," said Mayor Barbara Buffaloe. "As a result, they are held to high standards regarding their conduct and professionalism in responding to calls for service. Council condemns unreasonable use of force by police officers and expects a thorough investigation. I trust City management to take appropriate action once the investigation is complete." <br /><br />The City will continue to keep the community apprised of any further developments as allowed by law.</div>
