<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px; margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">Columbia Police release information regarding suspects involved in homicide in the 5300 block of E. Tayside Circle, May 22</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;">On May 21 at approximately 3:40 p.m. Columbia Police responded to a reported robbery in progress at a residence in the 5300 block of E. Tayside Circle. Upon arrival, officers located Janet L. Jago, 72, of Columbia who had sustained a gunshot wound.</p>
<p>Officers administered CPR until emergency medical services arrived and transported her to a local hospital for treatment. Ms. Jago was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Next of kin has been notified.</p>
<p>Columbia Police detectives have been able to obtain evidence to determine that Jermaine M. Burnett, 32, of Columbia was a person of interest in the homicide of Ms. Jago. Detectives were aware that probable cause was established for Mr. Burnett on multiple felony charges related to domestic violence incidents. </p>
<p>Several warrants had been issued for Mr. Burnett. Columbia Police located him on May 23. He refused to cooperate with officers and barricaded himself with two hostages inside an apartment building in the 3000 block of S. Providence Rd.</p>
<p>During the course of their investigation and while the barricade of Mr. Burnett was actively in progress, CPD detectives developed probable cause to arrest him for murder in the first degree for the death of Ms. Jago.</p>
<p>Officers learned that an adult and a juvenile who had been with Mr. Burnett were able to leave the hostage situation. To keep residents as safe as possible, officers evacuated that apartment building and others in close proximity. Property managers alerted others in the apartment complex to shelter in place.</p>
<p>Crisis negotiators with the Columbia Police Department and Boone County Sheriff’s Department communicated with Mr. Burnett to negotiate a peaceful surrender, which he continuously refused. Tear gas was introduced into the apartment unit to obtain his surrender and take him into custody, but he continued to refuse. After the deployment of gas, Mr. Burnett began firing a gun at officers, and officers returned fire. There were no injuries from this exchange.</p>
<p>Mr. Burnett communicated with negotiators through a cell phone over the next 90 minutes, after which communication from Mr. Burnett ceased. A tactical transition occurred with Boone County Sheriff’s Department personnel, who later entered the apartment and discovered that Mr. Burnett was deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Next of kin has been notified.</p>
<p>Through the investigation, detectives also identified a second suspect in the homicide of Ms. Jago. A juvenile was detained on May 23 on charges related to the May 22 homicide and is in the custody of the Boone County Juvenile Office. Charges include second degree murder, first degree robbery and armed criminal action.</p>
<p>Both the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol had been called to assist with the incident on South Providence Road. Because of their presence and to avoid any conflict of interest, the University of Missouri Police Department will conduct an independent criminal investigation into the shots fired that day.</p>
<p>The Department will conduct an internal affairs investigation to determine if officers’ behavior was consistent with policy and training, and it will continue to investigate the death of Ms. Jago.</p>
<p>CPD appreciates the help of property managers and patience of residents who were affected by the incident.</p>
<p>Many partner agencies provided valuable support throughout the day, including the Boone County Sheriff’s Office; Missouri State Highway Patrol; Columbia Fire Department; and the Boone County Fire Protection District.</p>
