(COLUMBIA, MO) - The City of Columbia has begun a national search for the City’s next police chief. Columbia’s current police chief, Geoff Jones, announced he will be retiring Aug. 1, 2023, after more than 24 years with the Columbia Police Department.

The City has hired Public Sector Search and Consulting, Inc., a search firm that specializes in recruiting police executives and managing the complex search process.

As a first step in the search process, the City has published a survey on its online engagement platform at BeHeard.CoMo.gov/city-of-columbia-police-chief-search. The City believes that input from both the community and department employees is crucial to finding the right person to effectively lead the Columbia Police Department.

This survey seeks to understand the expectations and desi
red experiences, attributes, and qualifications respondents would like to see in potential candidates. This input will be used to help develop the profile for the position. The survey will remain open throughout the search process to ensure opportunities for feedback. It is the City’s hope to announce a new chief of police this Fall.

Public Sector Search & Consulting will also be hosting a community forum Saturday, July 8, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Activity & Recreation Center, 1701 W. Ash Street. This forum is open to all members of the community and provides an opportunity to meet with and speak directly with the search consultant and provide in-person input to help shape a profile to be used in the search for candidates.

Community groups and staff of the Columbia Police Department will also have opportunities to provide input during this initial stage of the process.

The City will keep citizens abreast of updates in the se
arch. To receive updates, follow the City of Columbia on Facebook or Twitter, or subscribe to the City of Columbia police chief search project on BeHeard.CoMo.gov/city-of-columbia-police-chief-search by hitting "subscribe" under "stay informed".
