<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - The City of Columbia plans to conduct its annual dry snow run training exercise Tuesday, Nov. 14. Public Works Street crews, along with personnel from other departments that assist with winter weather response operations, will use the exercise as an opportunity to review safety procedures and practice snow routes to prepare for winter weather.<br /><br />The majority of participants in this exercise will depart from the Grissum Building, 1313 Lakeview Ave., between 9:30 and 10 a.m. This building serves as the central hub for snow operations for the City of Columbia. After they depart, residents may see City snowplow trucks driving their routes Citywide throughout the remainder of the day.<br /><br />Columbia has 1,450 lane miles of streets and 1,100 cul-de-sacs, making it necessary for the City to prioritize roads during ice and snow events. Over 691 lane miles of Columbia's roads are considered pr
 iority routes, creating a network of major roads and residential streets that extend throughout the city.<br /><br />As a refresher concerning the City's snow response policies, when accumulations are less than 4 inches, crews focus on priority routes, but will go into other residential areas during normal business hours if time and conditions on priority routes allow. If snow accumulations on streets exceed 4 inches, crews will work around the clock beginning with priority routes with the goal of achieving at least one passable lane at all times and achieving near-normal conditions as soon as practical. Crews will then also treat and plow every street in the city until all streets are at least at passable conditions. Please remember that although a street may still be snow packed, a road is considered passable if at least one lane is accessible for a front-wheel-drive vehicle driving at speeds well under the posted speed limit using prudent winter weather driving techniques.
