<div style="font-size: 110%; line-height:150%;"><h1 style="clear:both; margin-top: 75px;  margin-bottom: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;">City of Columbia Water & Light receives national commendation for electric restoration efforts in Springfield, Ill.</h1>
<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - <p style="display:inline;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">City of Columbia Water & Light has received a national commendation from the American Public </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Power Association for its support in electric power restoration efforts in Springfield, Ill.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On July 3, 2023, Columbia Water & Light sent five crew members to assist City Water, Light and Power in Springfield, Ill., which suffered widespread outages as a result of a derecho.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Water & Light crew members Chip Duren, Derrick Gallatin, Brett Helms, Dustin Wilhite and Joe Stevens used backyard equipment to connect infrastructure along easements to the main line. Because those areas are inaccessible by truck, the crews did all their work by hand. The crew returned to Columbia on July 9.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A derecho is a long-lived wind storm that is associated with thunderstorms and tornadoes. The June 29 derecho left more than 24,000 Springfield residents without electricity, with reports of more than 100 locations with power lines on the ground.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In total there were more than 210 trucks and more than 250 personnel from across the nation in Springfield for the response to the June 29 derecho and storms.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Columbia Water & Light participates in the American Public Power Association’s Mutual Aid Network, which coordinates with utilities and authorities during widespread power outages.</span></p>
