(COLUMBIA, MO) - At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 30, Columbia Police responded to a report of a vehicle-pedestrian collision in the area of East Broadway near North First Street. First responders arrived on scene and immediately provided medical assistance to an adult male victim.

Unfortunately, the victim, later identified as Brady L. Ewing, 55, of Columbia, succumbed to his wounds and was declared deceased at the scene. Next of kin has been notified. We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Ewing.

Through the investigation, our Traffic Unit determined that a 2019 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on East Broadway just west of North First Street as Mr. Ewing was walking eastbound in the turn lane.

It was when Mr. Ewing apparently walked into the passing lane of westbound traffic that he was struck by the Civic. Further circumstances surrounding the incident a
re still under investigation by our Traffic Unit.

Taking precautions can save a life. If you’re walking, be alert and take care when crossing the road, especially at night. Wear high-visibility clothing and, where possible, cross streets at crosswalks or intersections.

If a crosswalk or intersection is not available, find a well-lit area of the road where you have a good view of traffic. Wait for a gap in traffic that allows enough time to cross safely, and then continue watching for traffic as you cross.

Drivers should keep their phones down, eyes on the road and always be aware of the possibility of pedestrians attempting to cross the street. Thanks for looking out for each other.
