<div class="content"><span style="padding-left: 50px;">(COLUMBIA, MO)</span> - The City of Columbia is responding to winter weather that is continuing to impact the mid-Missouri area Tuesday, Jan. 9. The National Weather Service (NWS) winter weather advisory continues to be in effect through midnight Tuesday. A changeover to accumulating snow is expected to begin at 9 a.m., continuing until around 6 p.m.<br /><br />As winter weather can be unpredictable, residents are encouraged to closely monitor the forecast and changing road conditions throughout the mid-Missouri area. Updates will be posted on the City's various social media accounts. Information and updates are also available at <a style="white-space:nowrap" href="https://www.como.gov/">CoMo.gov</a>.<br /><br /><br /><strong>City of Columbia Public Works</strong><br /><strong>Contact: John Ogan, John.Ogan@CoMo.gov</strong><br /><br />At 7 a.m., the City of Columbia Public Works department deployed a 26-person snowplow cr
ew to address the ongoing winter weather conditions. Tuesday’s crew relieved the 16-person overnight snowplow crew, who had been on duty since 7 p.m. Monday. Crews will continue to focus on treating priority routes. <br /><br />Snow will continue throughout the day Tuesday, with anticipated accumulations reaching 2 inches. Temperatures should remain above freezing until around noon and gradually fall until around sunset, when precipitation is expected to end. Tuesday night temperatures will drop well below freezing, with overnight lows reaching 20 degrees.<br /><br />Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution when on the road. Please keep your speed low, your headlights on and give yourself plenty of extra stopping distance when approaching an intersection. Roads have the potential to refreeze as snow and temperatures continue to fall and drivers should avoid non-essential travel during any active winter weather event.<br /><br />Public Works has canceled the open
house meeting concerning the St. Charles sidewalk improvement project, which had been originally scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Eliot Battle Elementary School. This meeting will be rescheduled for a date and time to be determined. <br /><br /><br /><strong>Housing and Neighborhood Services</strong><br /><strong>Contact: Leigh Kottwitz, Leigh.Kottwitz@CoMo.gov</strong><br /><br />Residents are reminded to remove snow from sidewalks adjacent to the property they own or rent. Sidewalks are used by residents to get to school, work and shopping. The City appreciates the effort to keep our sidewalks accessible.<br /><br /><br /><strong>City of Columbia Office of Sustainability</strong><br /><strong>Contact: Michael J. Heimos, Michael.Heimos@CoMo.gov </strong><br /><br />The City of Columbia Office of Sustainability would like to remind residents of several tips when using salt. For best results, salt should be applied to cleared surfaces. Additionally, more salt does not
mean more melting. It is recommended to use less than 4 pounds of salt per 1,000 square feet <br /><br />Following a winter weather event, residents are encouraged to sweep up any extra salt that is visible on dry pavement to avoid that salt being washed into local streams through a storm drain or ditch system. </div>
