(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia Police have taken Steven Martin Strumpf, 31, of Columbia, into custody in connection with a fatal house fire in the 3900 block of Deerfoot Way. Strumpf faces charges of murder, arson and armed criminal action.

At approximately 12:20 a.m. Jan. 19, officers, along with the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) and CFD’s Fire Marshal’s Division, responded to a report of a house fire. One person was found deceased inside the structure. The investigation by the Columbia Fire Department, assisted by their arson dog, revealed the presence of accelerants adjacent to the body.

Further examination by the Criminal Investigations Division, based on information provided by CFD, led to the determination that the fire’s cause was suspicious. Through investigative efforts, Strumpf was identified as the suspect and detectives arrested him without incident. He is currently i
n custody at the Boone County Jail.

Positive victim identification has not been made at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652 or CrimeStoppers at 573.875.TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
