(COLUMBIA, MO) - The City of Columbia is monitoring and preparing to respond to winter weather that could impact the mid-Missouri area beginning Monday, Jan. 22. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory that will take effect at midnight.

Freezing rain is expected along with the possibility of light sleet overnight.

City resources will be utilized to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. The Public Works department is prepping snowplows, materials and equipment; monitoring local, state and regional forecasts; and preparing a response plan. City of Columbia Utilities will have additional crews on standby for the potential of downed power lines. The strong winds and weight of snow and ice on power lines and tree limbs could cause sporadic power outages.

As winter weather can be unpredictable, residents are encouraged to closely mo
nitor the forecast and changing road conditions throughout the mid-Missouri area. Residents may want to run errands and shop for groceries early to avoid travel during inclement weather.

Updates will be posted on the City's various social media accounts. Information and updates are also available at CoMo.gov.

Public Works
Contact: John Ogan, John.Ogan@CoMo.gov

City of Columbia Public Works staff are currently monitoring conditions ahead of the arrival of winter weather, with a 19-member snowplow crew reporting for overnight duty starting at 11 p.m. Light rain is expected to begin around 2 a.m., which will likely lead to glazing and widespread slick conditions. Residual salt remains on many road surfaces, but rain has the potential to wash away or dilute that residual salt or any additional pretreatments. Crews will focus their response o
n the treatment of priority roads as conditions allow.

Unnecessary travel is strongly discouraged Monday morning. Icy conditions can pose substantial challenges to road safety. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, increase following distances and consider delaying travel if possible. Remember that elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses can be particularly susceptible to freezing.

Columbia Regional Airport
Contact: Mike Parks, Michael.Parks@CoMo.gov

Air travel continues to be impacted across the country due to winter storms. Passengers flying through Columbia Regional Airport (COU) can check their flight status on the Arrivals & Departures page. Flight information is provided by the airline and updated every 15 minutes.
