(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Feb. 9, the Columbia Police Department (CPD) received a copy of Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney Benjamin Miller’s decision related to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Aug. 4, 2023, resulting in the death of Marquis Rivera, 22, of Columbia.

In the letter to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), Special Prosecutor Miller states that no charges will be filed against Columbia Police Department officers involved in the incident.

Following CPD protocol, when an officer-involved shooting results in a death, immediately after the event an independent investigation is conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Miller was appointed special prosecutor at the request of the Boone County prosecuting attorney.

"A loss of life is tragic to so many people, especially family and friends," Columbia Police Chief Jill Schlude said. "Ou
r department would like to extend its condolences to everyone affected, and I urge our community to come together and support each other during this difficult time."

A copy of Prosecuting Attorney Miller’s letter is attached.
