(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Sunday, March 17 at 7:03 a.m., the Columbia Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire in the 400 block of South Ninth Street.

The first crew arrived in two minutes to find heavy smoke and fire on the exterior of a single-story commercial building. The crew deployed a preconnected hose line and began to extinguish the fire.

As firefighting operations continued, it was soon discovered that the fire extended to the building’s interior. As additional personnel and equipment arrived, a water supply was established from a nearby fire hydrant, and additional preconnected hose lines were deployed to assist with firefighting efforts.

During scene operations, the crews noted cracking on multiple exterior walls. Out of an abundance of caution, the incident commander ordered all crews to evacuate the structure and also requested the City of Columbia&rsqu
o;s Building and Site Development respond to inspect the building.

Twelve Columbia fire crews, comprising of 25 personnel, responded to this incident. Crews were able to bring the fire under control within approximately 25 minutes.

Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours to assist fire investigators and also to ensure there were no areas of hidden fire remaining.

The Columbia fire marshals are continuing an origin and cause investigation. There were no injuries reported at the time of the incident.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms should be placed on the ceiling (or on a wall no closer than four inches from the ceiling) on every level of your home and outside of places where people sleep. Check your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button. Change your smoke alarm batteries at least twice per year when adjusting your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Re
place any smoke alarm over 10 years old.
