(COLUMBIA, MO) - On April 5, at 2:13 a.m., the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 1600 block of Business Loop 70 East.

The first crew arrived in four minutes to find a construction trailer engulfed in heavy smoke and flames.

The first arriving crews made a rapid-fire attack, focusing on the front of the structure. When the other crews arrived, they were assigned to search the rear of the trailer as it was not heavily involved in fire yet. As they forced through the rear door of the trailer, the fire intensified, and the crews continued their fire attack.

Crews brought the fire under control within approximately eight minutes. One firefighter was transported to a local hospital to treat non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported at the time of the incident.

Nine Columbia Fire units, comprising 18 personnel, responded to t
his incident. Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours to assist fire investigators and ensure that no areas of hidden fire remained.

The Columbia fire marshals are continuing an origin and cause investigation.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms should be placed on the ceiling (or on a wall no closer than four inches from the ceiling) on every level of your home and outside of places where people sleep. Check your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button. Change your smoke alarm batteries at least twice per year when adjusting your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Replace any smoke alarm over 10 years old.
