(COLUMBIA, MO) - On Monday, July 8, starting at approximately 3:45 a.m., the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to multiple water rescue incidents throughout the city. Five individuals and one dog were successfully rescued from floodwaters with the assistance of the Boone County Fire Protection District.

During a swift-water operation at Bear Creek near Rangeline Street, Columbia Fire Department personnel and Assistant Chief Matthew Tobben of the Boone County Fire Protection District rescued two civilians from floodwaters.

During the incident, the boat lost power and capsized. The two civilians and the Columbia Fire Department firefighter were able to be safely rescued, however, Assistant Chief Tobben was thrown from the boat and unfortunately passed away at the scene. His family has been notified.

The Columbia Fire Department will forever be grateful for Assistant Chief Tobbe
n's bravery and dedication to the community. We ask that you please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time.
